We are looking for a suitably qualified and experienced Engineer to serve on board Orkney Ferries Ltd. Inner Isles services on a full-time basis. There will be a requirement to reside on the inner isles while providing cover and in these instances, accommodation will be provided.
The rota for this position is 2 weeks on/2 weeks off plus an additional 4 weeks annual leave per complete year served.
Minimum qualifications for this position are as follows:
- STCW OOW Engineering or higher
or
- STCW Small Vessel Second Engineer or higher
or
A proven engineering background with MCA AEC part I & II.
Additional Engineering training may be considered for otherwise strong candidates who are short of any of the above MCA qualifications.
- Valid ENG1 medical
- STCW Personal Safety and Social Responsibility
- STCW Elementary First Aid
- STCW Personal Survival Techniques
- STCW Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (3-day course)
Ideally candidates should also hold the following, but training will be provided for the right candidate.
- STCW Crowd Control, Crisis Management and Human Behaviour
- STCW Passenger Safety, Cargo Safety and Hull Integrity course certificates
The salary scale is £45,380 to £50,210 pro-rata, inclusive of DIA at £2,997, subject to qualifications and continuous service within the company.
The Company operates a contributory pension scheme currently at 15%, as well as a sick pay scheme and an Employee Assistance Programme.

A vacancy exists for a qualified Able Seafarer to serve on board Orkney Ferries vessels, on our Outer North Isles services. However, you may be required on other routes as required.
The Rota for this is 2 weeks on/2 weeks of plus an additional 4 weeks annual leave per complete year served. Minimum certification required for this position is:
- Valid ENG 1 medical certificate.
- Certificate of proficiency as an Able Seafarer Deck Reg II/5
- STCW PSSR.
- STCW Elementary First Aid.
- STCW Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats
- STCW Personal Survival Techniques.
- STCW Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting (3-day course).
- EDH certificate.
Ideally candidates should also hold the following, but training will be provided for the right candidate.
- STCW Crowd Management
- STCW Passenger Safety, Cargo Safety and Hull Integrity
- STCW Crisis Management and Human Behavior
- Elementary Food Hygiene
The salary for this post is £40,912 pro rata per annum, inclusive of DIA (currently £2,997).
