Starting Salary: £28,211 (Inclusive of Distant Islands Allowance)
Orkney Ferries are pleased to announce that they will be commencing an Apprentice Deckhand Program (2 positions) which will enable anyone looking to make a start within the marine industry to progress and receive training locally.
The apprentice program will operate for a minimum of 3 years and will provide training locally on company vessels, at the Maritime Studies Department in Stromness and outwith Orkney as required.
The program will start with an introduction to company vessels and vessel routes within Orkney. Successful applicants will commence their apprenticeship gaining sea time, familiarisation and training on our vessels, which will eventually lead to an EDH (Efficient Deckhand) qualification.
This is an exciting opportunity for anyone seeking to have a career at sea and start their career within Orkney with a very busy shipping company which provides a lifeline service to our islands and communities.
This apprenticeship can be the first step along with sufficient sea time to your own personal development to AB (Able Seafarer) certification, and further onto Officer of the watch certification.
Training and uniform will be provided by Orkney Ferries and applicants should reside within Orkney.
Successful candidates will be required to work within a rota system, being 1 week on / 1 week off (16 to 18 years of age), or 2 weeks on / 2 weeks off (over 18 years of age), with an additional 1 week holiday every 3 months as per rota.
Applicants must hold / willing to obtain an ENG 1 Medical certificate as a minimum.
The Company operates a contributory pension scheme currently at 15%, as well as a sick pay scheme and an Employee Assistance Programme.

The apprentice program will operate for a minimum of 3 years and will provide training locally on company vessels, at the Maritime Studies Department in Stromness, UHI Orkney and outwith Orkney as required.
Orkney Ferries will provide all the relevant required training to be able to achieve a recognised Ships Cook qualification by the end of the three-year period. This includes all required STCW Courses for this position.

A vacancy exists for a qualified Able Seafarer to serve on board Orkney Ferries vessels, on our Outer North Isles services. However you may be requested to provide cover on other vessels as required.
The Rota for this is 2 weeks on/2 weeks of plus an additional 4 weeks annual leave per complete year served. Minimum certification required for this position is:
- Valid ENG 1 medical certificate.
- Certificate of proficiency as an Able Seafarer Deck Reg II/5
- STCW PSSR.
- STCW Elementary First Aid.
- STCW Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats
- STCW Personal Survival Techniques.
- STCW Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting (3-day course).
- EDH certificate.
Ideally candidates should also hold the following, but training will be provided for the right candidate.
- STCW Crowd Management
- STCW Passenger Safety, Cargo Safety and Hull Integrity
- STCW Crisis Management and Human Behavior
- Elementary Food Hygiene
The salary for this post is £40,912 pro rata per annum, inclusive of DIA (currently £2,997).
